After seeing the $4 billion plan to jump start self driving cars !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! went crazy. The idea of being able to sleep in on the way to work and get drunk as shit and then go home is very appealing to some of them. Now this got me thinking, how long before you think it will take for self-driving cars to reach the mass market? And secondly, how long before they reach a price for the general populous, rather than a few wealthy people?

I’m looking forward to seeing how many people get motion sickness in these things.

That and the new and confusing lawsuits that arise.
Especially with the drinking while being driven part.

Completely autonomous cars are still a while off, I think. 50 years? But we’ll see the slow creep of these technologies, as we have for a few years now, over the next decades. People will get more and more comfortable with them, insurance companies will give incentives for them, and eventually the general public and the government will start talking about whether or not it’s acceptable for public safety to let humans drive at all, except in certain, specific situations.
And affordability? You can get the Honda Sensing suite on the new Civic... http://automobiles.honda.com/sensing/

Realistically, I think it will take a lot longer than most people think it will. We have a do-nothing congress and government that it can and most likely will get tied up in, plus the technology is barely developed as it is.
Also, how will fully autonomous cars handle inclement weather and bad road conditions? There are just so many issues with this that haven’t been addressed at all or not well enough. Do we really want autonomous cars crashing everywhere because they cant handle snow and ice or a big pothole? I think humans are probably better in those situations than where our computer technology is at right now. What will insurance companies think of them? How vulnerable are they to being hacked by terrorists?
I also think most autonomous cars will be shared, rather than owned.
People are acting like autonomous cars are coming within the next few years. If you really stop and think about it that just doesn’t seem feasible. There are just too many issues to work through. I would imagine we are still at least a decade away. Some technology will inevitably trickle down to cars today and in the near future though.

I just hope that “manual” cars won’t be banned. I just hope they get stupid cheap.

This, and the opinions on autonomous cars are already being split along party lines. The technical challenges will be solved long before the legislative work is done.
